Kenneth F. Burns Medals
In addition to the team awards given annually to the winners of each heavyweight and lightweight event, all members of the first, second and third place crews receive individual medals. The medals were crafted by the nationally recognized designer, George Labedz, from North Attleboro, Massachusetts. The medallions honor the memory and legacy of Kenneth F. Burns, a longtime friend of the Eastern Sprints and all of collegiate rowing. Burns, affectionately known as "Mr. Sprints" was instrumental in bringing this regatta to Worcester in 1960. His contributions and dedication to the regatta have been noted on numerous occasions. In 1983, the EARC established the Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Trophy, presented annually to the Freshman Heavyweight Champions. At the 1984 regatta, the Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge, which spans Lake Quinsigamond just beyond the finish line, was dedicated to the former Shrewsbury police chief. With individual awards, the memory of Kenneth Burns touches the hearts of those for whom he devoted a lifetime of love and service.
