Men's Gymnastics (EIGL)
Week 9 - March 20
Gymnast of the Week:
Andrew Stover (Illinois, Chicago)
Stover, a junior from Fullerton, California captured 1st on high
bar(14.6) as the Flames(334.2) split with Nebraska (340.05) and Air
Force (325.30) on Friday night. His high bar performance was one
tenth off of the school record. Competing again on Sunday he turned
in an 84.0 score to capture the all-around as UIC again defeated
Air Force. Andrew is majoring in Entrepreneurship.
Rookie of the Week:
Chris Mooney (Temple)
Mooney, a freshman from Freeland, Maryland, won rings(14.7) and
counted on three of four events for the Owls(340.8) in their
homecoming win over Army(317.15) and Navy(323.6). Chris who
suffered a knee injury last year at the 2008 Blackjack Invitational
is just beginning to work the all-around again. A Kinesiology
major, he received his early training under Abdul Mammon at
Ultimate Gymnastics in Maryland.
Week 8 - March 13
Gymnast of the Week
Patrick McLaughlin (Temple)
McLaughlin, a junior from Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania, working
all-around for the first time this season, after undergoing knee
surgery last summer, scored an impressive 84.45 in the all-around
placing second to Miguel Pineda(85.3) of Penn State, ranked 9th
nationally in the all-around as Temple(332.3) lost a home dual meet
to the Nittany Lions(347.55). Along the way Patrick earned fist
place on vault(15.75) and parallel bars(14.7) and 2nd place on
pommel horse(14.0). A four time Junior Olympic qualifier he
received his early training at Rebounders in Maryland under Abdul
Mammen. He is the current ECAC Vault champion and is majoring in
Kinesiology.
Week 7 - March 5
Gymnast of the Week
Derek Gygax (William & Mary)
A junior from Stevensville, MD, Gygax posted a personal best 85.2
all-around score as William & Mary (333.4) lost to Navy(336.05)
and bested Springfield(328.1) in a double dual meet at the Naval
Academy. Derek's performance moved him into first place in the
William & Mary record book for all-around performances. He also
posted personal bests on floor exercise(14.7) and vault (15.0) and
was the high scorer for the Tribe on pommel horse(14.2) His scores
counted for the team on all six events. He is a Biology major and
was a first team Academic All-American selection by the College
Gymnastics Association last season. He received his early training
under Don Clark at Clark's Gymnastics.
Rookie of the Week
Andrew Faulk (U.S. Naval Academy)
A freshman from San Antonio, Texas, Faulk led the Middies(336.05)
to a season high win over William & Mary(333.4) and
Springfield(328.1) at Annapolis. He turned in a solid all-around
performance(85.15) and captured first place on vault(15.6) and
second on horizontal bar(14.2). He received his early training
under Yuejin Sun at Alamo Gymnastics.
Week 6 - February 28
Gymnast of the Week
Andy Hunter (William & Mary)
Hunter, from Tallahassee, Florida, scored an impressive 82.65
against James Madison. Since the open scoring system has been
instituted Andy ranks second in school history with his all-around
total. He scored a personal best on floor exercise (14.3),
rings(14.1), and vault(14.05) and won the competition on rings. A
Business major, Andy was a College Gymnastics Association second
team Academic All-American selection last year. He received his
early training at Gym Force in Tallahassee under Coach Jim
Hisey.
Rookie of the Week
Ty Evans (Springfield)
Evans, a freshman from San Jose, California scored an impressive
84.10 to place 2nd in the all-around against Adam Al-Rokh(84.80) of
Temple, as Springfield(331.55) lost to Temple(345.6) at home in
Blake Arena. Ty earned a 1st place on horizontal bar(14.35) and 2nd
on vault(15.75) and 3rd on floor exercise(14.3) to lead the Pride.
He received his early training at the Cal Sports Center. He is an
undeclared major leaning toward Applied Exercise Science.
Week 5 - February 19
Gymnast of the Week
Adam Al-Rokh (Temple)
Al-Rokh, a sophomore from Bensalem, PA where he attended the
Christa McAuliffe Academy, led the Owls(332.55) over William &
Mary(325.65) in a home meet in McGonigle Hall. The performance
marked his recent return to competition from an injury that kept
out of competition for nearly a month. Adam won the competition on
pommel horse(14.2) and placed 2nd on rings(14.3) to defending ECAC
Champion James Prim of William & Mary. He also garnered a 2nd
place on parallel bars(13.2). He is an Exercise Science major and
received his early training under former Owl gymnast Walt Kenny. He
is a four time academic all-American.
Rookie of the Week
Bobby Ryerson (U.S. Naval Academy)
Ryerson, a four year member of the Navy squad finally put together
routines that enabled him to compete at the collegiate level. He is
a senior from Clifton, NJ majoring in Economics. At the All-Academy
Championships he scored 12.8 on floor exercise to place 11th.
Working a second event he scored 13.4 on rings to place 9th. His
first collegiate competition was at the West Point Open on January
24th. He received his early gymnastics training under Coach Bob
Wasilewski at Gymnastics World, Inc in Clifton.
Week 4 - February 13
Gymnast of the Week
Josh Fox (Springfield)
Fox turned in an all-around performance of 81.65 to lead
Springfield over MIT this past weekend. A sophomore from Ellicott
City, Maryland he received his early training at the Columbia Gym
in Maryland.
Rookie of the Week
Andrew Faulk (Navy)
Faulk turned in an outstanding performance winning the
all-around(81.35) as Navy(330.05) defeated Army(318.30). Along the
way he scored 13.95 on floor exercise to place 2nd and led the
Middies with a 15.30 to win the vault competition. A freshman from
San Antonio, Texas Andrew received his early training under Yuejin
Sun at Alamo Gymnastics.
Week 3 - February 5
Gymnast of the Week
Nick Pesino (UIC)
A senior from Des Plaines, Illinois, Pesino delivered two critical
performances as Illinois-Chicago (337.05) defeated the Temple Owls
(331.2) at home on Saturday. Working only two events, Nick placed
first in vault (15.5) and 2nd on horizontal bar (14.0) to spark the
Flames. Nick is a Communications major and received his early
training under Coach Mike Bush at Buffalo Grove Gymnastics.
Week 2 - January 29
Gymnast of the Week
Dylan Parrott (U.S. Naval Academy)
A sophomore from Rockwell, North Carolina, Parrott won the
all-around competition (83.55) and horizontal bar (14.70) at the
Navy Open in Annapolis, Maryland as the Middies (332.50) took first
place over William & Mary (327.75), Temple(326.35), Springfield
(324.15), Air Force(324.10) and MIT (307.65). He also placed second
on floor exercise (14.85) and 6th on pommel horse(13.15). Dylan is
a Systems Engineering major with a 3.66 GPA. He received his early
training under Greg Limelin at Cabarras County Gymnastics and was
an eight time Junior Olympic competitor. As a freshman he was
recognized as the ECAC Rookie Gymnast of the Week three times.
Rookie of the Week
Matt Martin (Temple University)
A freshman from Bow, New Hampshire, Martin competed in five events
at the Navy Open in Annapolis on Saturday and again at home on
Sunday against the Air Force Academy. At the Navy Open he placed in
the top 10 on four events (FX/14.1),((R/13.85),(V/15.0),((HB/14.0),
counting on four of five events for the Owls. At home on Sunday in
Temple's(327.20) win over Air Force (325.90), he scored 68.30 for
five events and again counted for the Owls on four events. Matt
received his early training at Gymnastics Village in New Hampshire
under Igor Kniazev and was a USA age group champion on rings
(14-15) and placed 10th all-around at the Junior Olympics. He is a
Finance major at Temple.
Week 1 - January 25
Gymnast of the Week
Brett Lazarus (MIT)
Competing in his first collegiate competition for MIT, Lazarus, a
freshman from Deerfield, Illinois outside of Chicago completed the
all-around at the 2009 West Point Open placing with a very
respectable score of 78.15 to place 9th in the competition. On the
way he qualified for the individual event finals on horizontal bar
where he placed 5th (13.35) with an execution score of 8.95. He
received his early gymnastic training at the Buffalo Grove
Gymnastics Center in Buffalo Grove, Illinois and is planning to
major in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Computer
Science.
