2005 ECAC IGC Rookie of the Year
Luke Vexler - Temple
Luke had a great impact on the Temple Gymnastics team in his first
year. Luke competed all-around in each meet this season, capping
his first year with a 5th place all-around finish at the ECAC
Championship, where he also placed 3rd on floor exercise and 2nd on
pommel horse. He is an all-around selectee for the NCAA
Championship qualifier at West Point. Luke is from a gymnastics
family, both parents having competed at the collegiate level as
well as sister Talya (Georgia) and brother Aaron (Temple from 1994
through 1998).
2005 ECAC IGC Most Improved
Gymnast(s)
Andrew Malaby - Springfield
Andrew competed for the Pride on floor exercise, rings, vault,
and parallel bars and continued to improve throughout the season.
His top event has been rings where his performances improved from
an 8.0 to 8.85 at the ECAC Championship earning him a 13th place
finish. Andrew has a great attitude and serves on the Student
Athletic Advisory Council and sings in the school choir. He is a
biology major with 3.9 gpa.
Josh Coblenz - MIT
Josh is a freshman math major at MIT. He began the season
recovering from elbow surgery and by December was back working
basic skills on all six events. Dilligent in his rehabilitation,
his hard work began to pay off in January when he was able to knit
together simple routines. His hard work payed off as his all-around
scores improved from 35-36 to a consistent 45 as he gradually
introduced skills and fulfilled requirements. Most impressive was
his performance at the ECAC Championship where he hit six for six
propelling MIT to to their first team score of 180. His unwavering
commitment and tenacity will certainly benefit MIT in future years.
2005 ECAC Alpha Factor Gymnast of the
Year
Neil Faustino - UIC
As a freshman Neil was recognized several times as Rookie of the
Week culminating in being voted ECAC Rookie of the Year as a
freshman. He has been UIC co-captain for two years and is currently
vice-president of the Student Athletic Council. He is a two time
ECAC vault champion and helped lead UIC to the 2004 ECAC team
championship. He was 4th in the all-around at the 2004 ECAC
Championship and 3rd this year. Neil is active outside the gym as
well, where he has participated in the Chris Zorek Food Drive for
the underprivileged and participates in the annual Children's
Christmas Drive at the UIC Hospital. Additionally, he delivers food
to homeless shelters during the holiday seasons. And as
vice-president of the SAC Committee, he instituted a neighborhood
clean up of the surrounding UIC community for April 05. He is an
electrical engineering major from Stockton, CA.
Coaches of the Year
Coach of the Year
Doug Van Everen - Army
Doug is now in his fifteenth season as head coach of the Cadets
with three years prior head coaching experience at San Jose State
in California. He is one of the most well respected coaches in his
profession being recognized by his peers for ECAC and East Regional
honors two years ago. During his career at Army he has coached 3
NCAA All-Americans, 13 ECAC Champions, 13 National Scholar
Athletes, and one Rhodes Scholar. His 2003 team capped a
13-1 season record and 2nd place ECAC finish that included a win over eventual ECAC Champion Temple. His 2004 team finished with a 10-4 season record and another 2nd place ECAC finish. The 2005 Army team completed their season with a stunning 12-1 record capturing their first ECAC Championship since 1962. This year Army will play host to the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship on April 7-9.
Assistant Coach of the Year
Carmine Giglio - Army
Carmine is now in his fifth season as an assistant at Army. Since
his arrival at Army the Cadets have crowned an Eastern League
champion every year, and prior to this year have sent a school
record 12 individual qualifiers to the NCAA Championships. Giglio
has helped Army win the All-Academy title four straight years. A
native of Syracuse, NY Giglio won state titles in the all-around,
pommel horse, and horizontal bar leading Henninger High School to
the number one state ranking in 1985. A collegiate gymnast, Carmine
enjoyed an outstanding career at Western Michigan University, where
as three time team captain, he became the first Bronco to qualify
as an all-around gymnast to the NCAA Championships.
