Week 6: UIC's Neal Thompson Named Gymnast of the Week

Gymnast of the Week:

Neal Thompson-University of Illinois-Chicago
Junior, Woodside, Calif.

Thompson turned in two outstanding all-around performances last weekend, the first on Friday night as #12 UIC (336.20) lost a tough meet to #2 Stanford (356.70) and #14 Air Force (338.50) in Colorado Springs.  In Friday’s loss Thompson placed third in the all-around (82.55).  On Sunday, Thompson won the all-around with a score of 86.50 along with first place finishes on pommel horse (14.70) and parallel bars (14.70) as the Flames (348.60) avenged their Friday night loss to Air Force (346.45).  A sociology major, he attended Carlmont High School and received his early gymnastics training at the San Mateo Gymnastics Center under Krasmire Dunev. He was a 2009 NCAA qualifier.

Rookie of the Week:

Kyle Voissem-University of Illinois-Chicago
Freshman, West Allis, Wisc.

Returning to the line-up for the Flames after a neck injury, Voissem placed second in the all-around competition (83.90) in Friday's loss to Stanford and Air Force in Colorado Springs.  His score of 14.75 on floor exercise was good for 2nd place behind Eddie Penev of Stanford.  On Sunday, he turned in another second place all-around performance (86.50) finishing only 0.1 behind teammate Neal Thompson (86.50) in UIC's comeback win over Air Force.  The LAS major received his early training at the Swiss Turners.
