Cornell Claims 2007 Title
EAST STROUDSBURG - Cornell
University finished the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling
Association (EIWA) Championships in first place winning its
first team title since 1993. Four wrestlers took second place and
Jordan Leen (149) and Steve Anceravage (165) won individual
titles. Cornell qualified eight wrestlers for the NCAA
tournament.
The EIWA held its 103rd annual wrestling tournament this Friday and
Saturday (March 2nd and 3rd) in Koehler Field House at East
Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.
The Big Red edged out the US Naval Academy by 19 points to earn the
victory. Lehigh, who has won the last five titles, finished
in fourth place, 17.5 points behind University of Pennsylvania.
Penn held the advantage in number of individual champions with
three total. Matthew Eveleth (125), Mathew Valenti (133), and
Matt Dragon (157) all had first place finishes for the Quakers.
Eveleth, who stunned second-ranked and defending national runner-up
Troy Nickerson with a 5-3 win in the final, earned the tournament's
Most Outstanding Wrestler honor. Valenti was given the
Fletcher Award for the most team points in a career in the EIWA
tournament after winning his third title.
Matthew Stoplinski (174) and Ed Prendergast (285) tallied first
places for Navy. Lehigh's Matt Ciasulli topped the 141 lb.
weight class. Louis Caputo got the lone win for Harvard at
184 lbs. while American's Joshua Glenn finished first at 197.

The EIWA is the oldest intercollegiate wrestling tournament in the
country, and is second only to the Big Ten Conference in the number
of qualifiers it sends to the NCAA Championships. East Stroudsburg
has been a member since 1977, but this will be the first time that
ESU has hosted the event.
