University of Massachusetts-Amherst - Assistant Director for Campus Recreation & Sport Clubs

The University of Massachusetts Amherst Department of Athletics is accepting applications from qualified applicants for a Staff Assistant, Assistant Director for Campus Recreation & Sport Clubs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Assist in the administration of a comprehensive intramural sports and sport club program.  Assist in providing student development and leadership opportunities for student staff and the University participants.  Collaborate with Campus Recreation staff in the management of a comprehensive recreation program.  Provide students with a positive athletic experience focused on healthy behavior and individual well-being through sports and recreational activity programs:  assist in developing, planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive intramural sports and sport club program consisting of both competitive and recreational activities and clubs; organize and facilitate intramural captains meetings; ensure the practice of safety/risk management procedures & protocols, including evaluating playing fields, indoor spaces and equipment inventory.  Ensure that accident and incident reports are completed, maintained and reviewed regularly; assist in the annual budget by identifying and recommending equipment and supply needs and maintaining inventory; prepare written communications, such as monthly reports, activity summaries and participation statistics; collaborate with and develop and  maintain relationships with students, faculty/staff and the University community, including Athletics Facilities and the Center for Student Development; collaborate with the Center for Student Development in planning, developing, assessing and co-supervising Athletic sport clubs.  Develop effective working relationships with club officers to assist them in the administration of club activities in compliance with University, conference and governing body policies; represent Campus Recreation at regional and national conferences, workshops and tournaments; serve on University committees; adhere to NCAA, conference and University rules and regulations; assume responsibility for the intramural and sport club programs in the absence of the Associate Director/Intramurals and Sport Clubs; perform other duties as assigned.  Provide students with leadership development, personal learning, team building, and shared goal-oriented opportunities.  Utilizing an understanding of the issues, trends and challenges in intramural activities and sports club management:  collaborate in the recruitment, hiring, training, supervising and evaluating of intramural personnel, including program assistants, sport supervisors and sports officials; assist in coordinating staff safety training activities and ensure that staff meets the minimum qualifications, certification and standards required by individual job assignments; assist in the implementing and evaluating the intramural civility system and develop strategies to resolve conflict and ensure sportsmanship and fair play; organize and facilitate sport club officer meetings; collaborate with the Center for Student Development to develop educational materials (i.e. sport club manual) and provide training and educational sessions for club members and their representatives.  Develop and keep current coach/instructor agreements and training programs; enforce the code of conduct and discipline for sport club participants and coaches.  Annually evaluate and assess the code of conduct for modifications and make recommendations for changes; serve as advisor and mentor to the Student Officials Association.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s degree preferred) in recreation, sport studies, athletic administration or related field.  Minimum of two years of demonstrated graduate or professional recreation experiences at the college or university level; preferred intramural sports experience at the college or university level.    Working knowledge of playing rules, officiating and safety/risk protocols for recreation management.  Demonstrated ability in organizing, scheduling, and promoting sport activities, leagues and tournaments.  Demonstrated experience in student supervision and student development.  Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies and to collaborate effectively as a member of a goal-oriented team.  Proficient in business computer applications including web interface and database management.  Able to lift and move recreation equipment up to 50 lbs.  Moderate to light movement is required for officiating duties.  Able to work a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends.

SALARY RANGE:  Hiring Range: $35,500-$44,700; Normal Starting Salary: $35,500-$40,100; PSSAP Level 25.
