Brown University Earns 2007 ECAC Turfer Athletic Rowing Trophy

Cape Cod, Massachusetts - Commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Rudy Keeling announced today that Brown University has earned the 2007 ECAC Turfer Athletic Rowing Trophy.

The ECAC Turfer Athletic Rowing Trophy is given annually to the ECAC College or University men's and women's rowing programs that best demonstrate the core values of the ECAC (tradition, diversity and service), and the values of Turfer Athletic (determination, perseverance, resilience, and commitment).

At the 34th Eastern Association of Women's Rowing Colleges (EAWRC) Sprints, Brown's women's team earned first place finishes in the second varsity eight (6:39.9) and novice eight (6:51.1).  Coach John and Phoebe Murphy's team also earned a second place finish in the varsity eight (6:32.3) and finished second in overall team points.

The Bears finished their season by winning the overall team points trophy at the 2007 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Women's ‘Rowing Championships.  It was the program's fifth national championship title.

The men's team coach by Paul Cooke and Steve Ouellette saw the freshman eight earn gold at the 62nd Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Sprints and silver at the 105th Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships.  The varsity eight finished fourth at both championships and earned a tie for second in overall points at the EARC Sprints.

Brown University becomes the fourth recipient and third division I institution, to earn the six year old award.  The Bears will receive the trophy during the annual ECAC Honors Dinner presented by Jostens on Sunday, September 30th, in conjunction with the ECAC Convention and Trade Show presented by Clark Companies, Clough Harbour Sports, Musco Lighting, and Sportsfield Specialties.
