TCNJ's Joe Camillone Named Recipient of ECAC's Dr. Donald Grover Memorial Award
CAPE COD, Mass. - Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Commissioner Rudy Keeling announced today that Joe Camillone of The College of New Jersey has been selected as the recipient of the Dr. Donald Grover Memorial Award.
The Donald Grover Memorial Award is bestowed periodically to an athletic trainer of an ECAC member institution who has achieved outstanding success in his or her career and has made an unusual contribution in the interest of intercollegiate athletics. The award will be presented on Sunday, September 28, at the ECAC Convention Honors Dinner at the Albany Crowne Plaza.
Camillone served as the head athletic trainer at The College of New Jersey for 35 years, retiring on June 1, 2008. Over the course of his tremendous career, Camillone dedicated himself to the safety and betterment of student-athletes at the college.
On January 6, 2007, Camillone was awarded the 2007 Eastern Athletic Trainers Association (EATA) Presidential Award. Camillone became only the second person honored with the Presidential Award, which is given to a person who shows unselfish and dedicated efforts which has advanced the EATA and the athletic training profession.
In the fall of 2003, Camillone was also honored by his alma mater, the University of Findlay (Findlay, Ohio) with the school's Distinguished Alumni Citation. He was also honored in 2007 with the All-America Football Foundation Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award.
Certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), Camillone is also licensed by the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners. He came to TCNJ in August of 1973 after serving as a teacher and athletic trainer at Cedar Ridge High School in Old Bridge, New Jersey. Camillone holds a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Findlay and a master's degree in physical education from Eastern Michigan University.
Camillone served as the first president of the Eastern Athletic Trainers Association from 1983-85. He is also a member of the Governor's Athletic Training Advisory Committee. In 1995, he was honored by the NATA with the Distinguished Service Award for his dedication to athletic training. Active within the EATA, Camillone currently serves as the Chair of the Honors and Awards Committee.
At TCNJ, he has been responsible for the development and
maintenance of the health care program for student-athletes. In
particular, he supervised the treatment of injuries and
administered rehabilitative exercise. He also taught "Prevention of
Athletic Injury" and a "Health Issues" seminar at TCNJ.
