Dan Mara Elected President of ECAC
ALBANY, N.Y. - Dan Mara, commissioner of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, has been elected president of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Mara has been a member of the ECAC Board of Directors since 2005. The selection was made at the ECAC Annual Convention in Albany, N.Y. The announcement was made by ECAC Commissioner Rudy Keeling.
The ECAC is the nation's largest collegiate athletics conference, composed of 320 colleges and universities in Divisions I, II and III. A conference of conferences, the ECAC includes within its organizational structure six playing leagues and nine affiliate organizations. The conference office is located in the Asa S. Bushnell Center, located in Centerville, Massachusetts.
Mara's term as president will run from September 2008 to September 2010. He previously served a two-year term as vice president of the ECAC from 2006-2008.
"The ECAC has a great tradition in intercollegiate athletics and to be chosen to lead the organization is a great honor." Mara said. "I look forward to working with Commissioner Keeling, the Board of Directors and the ECAC staff to continue the great work of the conference and to find new areas where we can assist our many member institutions and conferences."
Mara has been commissioner of the CACC since July 2006. Previously, he was associate vice president for athletics and fitness at Post University from 1995 to 2006 and assistant director of athletics and women's basketball coach at Mitchell College from 1976 to 1995.
Mara was inducted into the National Junior College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008, the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Mitchell College Hall of Fame in 1998. He is currently a member of the prestigious NCAA Division II Management Council and the chairman of the NCAA Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee. Mara is also the chair of the NCAA Division II Convention Planning Team. He previously served the ECAC as a member of the Marketing, Strategic Planning and Nominating committees.
Mara holds degrees from Mitchell College and Roger Williams University. He lives in Waterbury with his son Danny (5).
