ECAC Announces Red Hill Award Winners For Excellence In Football Officiating

The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced today that football officials Jack Farley (Jefferson, Mass.), Todd Boyd (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), and Steve Angelella (Bellmore, N.Y.) have been named the 2009 recipients of the Red Hill Award for excellence in football officiating. The recipients of the Red Hill Award will be honored on February 18, 2010 at the annual Eastern College Football Awards Banquet presented by FieldTurf, an event held in the Pegasus Restaurant at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, N.J.
The award is named for Red Hill, who was an ECAC football
official for 29 years. Hill served as the director of the
Eastern Association of Independent Football Officials Boston
Chapter for 12 years. He served as the vice president and the
president of the EAIFO, and was responsible for instituting many of
the EAIFO policies. Over his career, Hill has made numerous
contributions to the EAIFO and to college football officiating in
general.
Farley's officiating career has expanded over 34 years, including
both high school and college levels. He began collegiate
officiating in 1982, becoming a member of the New England
Independent College Football Officials. In 1986, he joined
the Boston chapter of the EAIFO. Over the span of his career,
Farley has officiated over 250 varsity contest for the EAIFO.
For 12 years Farley served as a line judge in Division I-AA
football, officiating in the Yankee Conference, Patriot League, and
Ivy League. During his career, Farley has officiated eight of
the top 11 all-time rivalry games including Lafayette/Lehigh,
Harvard/Yale, Amherst/Williams, and Richmond/William and
Mary. Farley has made an appearance in six NCAA playoff games
at the Division I-AA, II and III level. In addition, he has
officiated three ECAC regional playoff games. In 2009, Farley
received the Brian Sullivan Award, given to an on field official
for representing the best qualities in officiating by the Boston
Chapter EAIFO. Within football, Farley has also served as a
field technician, clinic faculty member, and mentor. When not
officiating, Farley served as a social studies teacher, assistant
principal, department chair, and basketball and swimming coach for
35 years at Assabet Valley and Wachusett High School in
Massachusetts. Farley currently is an adjunct professor of history
and government at Cape Cod Community College. Farley and his
wife Joellen have been married for 38 years, and have two children,
Jamie and Allison.
Boyd began officiating high school football in 1988 and began officiating at the college level in 1994. At the college level he has worked for the ECAC, the ECFOA, and the Colonial, Ivy, and Patriot leagues. On the field, Boyd has worked ECAC playoff games in 1995 and 2003. In 2007, Boyd worked the FCS playoff game between McNeese State University and Eastern Washington University. Off the field, Boyd has held many offices for various officiating organizations. He served as the high school rules interpreter for the Central Hudson Valley football officials from 2000-2008. Boyd has been a member of the Western New England chapter of EAIFO since 1994, served on the executive board from 2003-05, and was president in 2005. He has been a director on the EAIFO Board of Directors representing WNE chapter since 2004. Currently Boyd is a senior technical staff member at IBM Corporation in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He has been married to his wife Margaret for 19 years, and they have two children, Meaghan and Michael.
Angelella started his career by officiating high school football in 1986. He has been an EAIFO member of the Metro chapter since 1992. Angelella has been an ECAC member since 1992, being a field and back judge from 1992-2000. Since 2000, he has moved up as a referee, which is now his current position. In 2009, Angelella was an official for the NCAA Division II quarterfinal game. In addition to football Angelella has been officiating high school lacrosse since 1994 and has been a member of the National Intercollegiate Lacrosse Officials Association (NILOA) since 2002. Outside of officiating, Angelella has been a member of the Plumber's Local Union #1 since 1982. He currently resides in Bellmore, N.Y., with his wife Lorretta. He has a daughter, Stephanie, and stepson, Charles.
