ECAC Announces Red Hill Award Winners For Excellence In Football Officiating

The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced today that football officials Jack Farley (Jefferson, Mass.),  Todd Boyd (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), and Steve Angelella (Bellmore, N.Y.) have been named the 2009 recipients of the Red Hill Award for excellence in football officiating. The recipients of the Red Hill Award will be honored on February 18, 2010 at the annual Eastern College Football Awards Banquet presented by FieldTurf, an event held in the Pegasus Restaurant at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, N.J.

The award is named for Red Hill, who was an ECAC football official for 29 years.  Hill served as the director of the Eastern Association of Independent Football Officials Boston Chapter for 12 years.  He served as the vice president and the president of the EAIFO, and was responsible for instituting many of the EAIFO policies.  Over his career, Hill has made numerous contributions to the EAIFO and to college football officiating in general.

Farley's officiating career has expanded over 34 years, including both high school and college levels.  He began collegiate officiating in 1982, becoming a member of the New England Independent College Football Officials.  In 1986, he joined the Boston chapter of the EAIFO.  Over the span of his career, Farley has officiated over 250 varsity contest for the EAIFO.  For 12 years Farley served as a line judge in Division I-AA football, officiating in the Yankee Conference, Patriot League, and Ivy League.  During his career, Farley has officiated eight of the top 11 all-time rivalry games including Lafayette/Lehigh, Harvard/Yale, Amherst/Williams, and Richmond/William and Mary.  Farley has made an appearance in six NCAA playoff games at the Division I-AA, II and III level. In addition, he has officiated three ECAC regional playoff games.  In 2009, Farley received the Brian Sullivan Award, given to an on field official for representing the best qualities in officiating by the Boston Chapter EAIFO.  Within football, Farley has also served as a field technician, clinic faculty member, and mentor.  When not officiating, Farley served as a social studies teacher, assistant principal, department chair, and basketball and swimming coach for 35 years at Assabet Valley and Wachusett High School in Massachusetts. Farley currently is an adjunct professor of history and government at Cape Cod Community College.  Farley and his wife Joellen have been married for 38 years, and have two children, Jamie and Allison.

Boyd began officiating high school football in 1988 and began officiating at the college level in 1994. At the college level he has worked for the ECAC, the ECFOA, and the Colonial, Ivy, and Patriot leagues. On the field, Boyd has worked ECAC playoff games in 1995 and 2003.  In 2007, Boyd worked the FCS playoff game between McNeese State University and Eastern Washington University.
